Interview with Interview w/ DJ Burchie

Hometown?

Benicia, California

How it all got started?

My parents have very good tastes in music and I was introduced to it at a very young age. I went out and bought turntables after hearing a mix by DJ AM. His song selection and blends between tracks was amazing and unlike anything I’d heard on the radio. He put a hip-hop beat behind Oasis’ “Wonderwall”, and I decided I wanted to learn how to do something like that.

What were you listening to when you started and what are you listening now?

When I first started spinning three years ago, I was into the “mash-up” type remixes popularized by guys like DJ AM, DJ Sizzahandz, DJ Spider, and are unfortunately now played out. Over time I’ve evolved, and currently really like the new style of electro/blog-house/new-disco music that’s catching fire in places like L.A. and New York. Some of my all time favorite artists/groups include: Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Daft Punk, N.E.R.D., Stevie Wonder, The Drifters, Mark Ronson, Kanye West, and E-40

What are your plans this year shows/touring?

I am currently playing two nights a week downtown with DJ C.M.G., and am going to move back up to the Bay Area at the end of June and hopefully start playing at some clubs in the city.

What should people expect at your show…and Crazy live show story

Basically a wide variety of great music. I try my best not to get stuck in one specific genre of music for too long, and am always trying to find creative ways to flow seamlessly from one type of music to the next. I play more old school hip-hop and dance music than most deejays do in this town, as well as play new stuff that people might not have heard yet. My ultimate goal is to keep everyone in the club happy. The drunk girls who still request Flo-rida, the hipsters who want to hear Justice, and the hip-hop heads who want to hear old Too-Short.

One crazy story that comes to mind is about a month ago a seemingly nice girl comes up to me and asks if I can play Whitney Houston’s “I wanna dance with somebody”. It’s a decent request so I tell her I will in a little while. After 5 or 10 minutes she asks again and I tell her in a couple songs. So I play the song and apparently she is in the bathroom or outside smoking and misses the song. She comes back up to me and says “play my damn song” and I tell her I just played it, and she freaks out demanding I play it again. I tell her that I never play a song twice she steps up into the booth acting like she is about to throw a punch. Luckily her friend was there to restrain her and take her out of the bar.
Who would you like to tour with?

Anyone who appreciates good music, and knows how to throw a good party.

What can you promote in this article to help you make a living in this
crazy world of ours.

For people not be so ignorant when it comes to music. Especially in this town, people seem to be afraid of dancing to a song they don’t know all the words to. I remember playing “Stronger” by Kanye about a year ago, when it was brand new and the dance floor almost stopped. I even had a girl come up to me and say, “Um, can you not play this techno stuff, and play something I can dance to.”

If your are of age whats your favorite adult beverages

7 & 7’s, Grey Goose and tonic, Patron shots.

Favorite bar/club?

In this town I would have to say The Library, but I also like Native on Friday nights when they bring in solid deejays.

Outside of this town I’m a big fan of Tryst and Pure in Las Vegas. Clubs like those in Vegas are a step above anywhere else that I’ve been.

What is your favorite nightlife/photo website?

Niites.com of course

Who should we interview next?

From this town I would say DJ CMG, who I usually dj with, or DJ DP who is at the Library on weekends.

Kevin Scott from LA dj’ed Native last Friday and is a really cool guy. I don’t really know dj holla but he just recently moved to Vegas from here and has a good ear for music

AND MOST OF ALL: THANK YOU!
