Hometown?
Born and raised in SLO town.
How it all got started?
Man, 8th grade leadership music at lunch! Nuff said! After that, I bought my first set of turntables that summer, and have been on the decks since.
What were you listening to when you started and what are you listening now?
When I started, it was all about what was hot on the radio (Hip Hop & R&B). Nowadays I spend hours on hours trying to find new music that I can play in my sets, then hip hop, rock, house, and lots of work other DJ's do. I think the key to the DJ game is to stay true to yourself, and then incorporate elements of other artists sets in your own work in order to create a unique and exciting sound.
What are your plans this year shows/touring?
2008 has been a busy year, and is getting even more hectic! I'm in the process of producing and marketing my own remixes, and then have residencies @ Native and the Library Lounges, and an offer to spin @ DTB Paso. However, getting the DJ Flight brand out there to the world is the main goal.
What should people expect at your show…and Crazy live show story
If people come in with an open mind, they'll leave feeling a true "club" experience. When I'm on the decks, all of the mixing is live, almost all of the "premixed" remixes are remixed live, and there will always be new levels of creativity reached. Expect to hear music you never expected to hear in the club! For instance, how many times before the S.I.N.C.O. de Mayo party have you seen the whole dance floor start walking it out to Nancy Sinatra?! And how many times in the last 5 years have you heard "Move Bitch" followed up by "No Scrubs?" Expect some of that!
As far as crazy stories go-- nothing too crazy-- Just girl fights and suburban kids trying to urban dances. However, my favorite gig was the entire summer @ Mission Grill. We'd be out on the patio (Mission Grill is now Native Lounge) since the inside was under construction, so we'd drink until the 40 degree weather didn't affect us, and throw the sickest outdoor parties every Friday and Saturday night!
Who would you like to tour with?
It'd be sick to tour w/ any group where music was the first concern of the people at the venue.
What can you promote in this article to help you make a living in this crazy world of ours.
The DJ game is about self-promotion-- www.djflight.us & www.myspace.com/slodj (shameless plugs). Also, support your local bands and groups, and tip your bartenders well!
What's your favorite adult beverages?
Bacardi and Diet or Hanger One Lime, rocks, if I'm chillin. Vodka redbull if I'm in the mix and decide to drink. Shots of Jameson always do the body good too.
Favorite bar/club?
As a resident of more than one bar, I can't really say a local bar, but Voodoo in Vegas is always fun when the weather is nice. How about anywhere but the Gaslight Lounge as far as SLO goes?!
What is your favorite nightlife/photo website?
Niites.com ;)
Is there an mp3 of one of your songs we can play on the site for promotional purposes near your article?
Sent in a previous email entitled "MP3" . If that link doesn't work, check out www.myspace.com/thedjflight and there's a song entitled "SINCO" that is downloadable ... it's like 4 minutes long.
Who should we interview next?
In SLO-- I'd say somebody from the other spectrum of the nightlife scene. Focusing on Native is great to get the big parties going, but for the locals, I'd like to see maybe an interview of somebody at Bulls, or Library, or McCarthy's... It's all one big family out here.
